Dear Partners in Travel,
Please be advised that, effective 1 July 2026, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) requires all travellers entering or departing South Africa to complete a mandatory online Traveller Declaration prior to travel. This declaration forms part of South Africa’s Customs process and enables travellers to fulfil their legal obligation to declare goods, currency and any other relevant items being brought into or taken out of the country.
What You Need to Know
- Who does this apply to? All travellers entering or departing South Africa by air, land or sea.
- When should it be completed? Before the commencement of your journey.
- Why is it required? To declare goods, currency and other applicable items in accordance with South African Customs regulations (South African Revenue Service)
The online Traveller Declaration can be accessed via the SARS Traveller Declaration Portal.
Should you require assistance with the declaration process, please contact the SARS Traveller Declaration team at travellerescalations@sars.gov.za. You may also refer to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) available on the portal for additional guidance.
We strongly recommend that travellers complete their online Traveller Declaration well in advance of departure to help avoid delays at South African ports of entry and exit. Please ensure that all information submitted is accurate and retain a copy of your electronic confirmation, as it may be requested during your journey.
Kind Regards,
Pieter Erasmus
